Hard working period at the end of 2019, with many important decisions, is behind the Organizing team of the Fifth European Universities Games.

Everything that has been done to prepare the biggest event in our country, that will be held in Belgrade from July 12 until July 25, 2020, satisfied EUSA representatives who have repeatedly stated that these Games could be the best one so far.

Serbia will have another opportunity to prove itself as a supreme sports competition organizer, hence the venues where more than 5000 athletes will compete for medals, will also have an important role.

The head of Venues Department at EUG 2020, Akim Komnenic, outlines what was done during the last year and at the beginning of 2020.

– There is a very demanding period that we have passed through. We were trying to catch up on work from months, even years behind us. We defined the list of all sports venues, with total of 28 of them for 19 sports and 2 para sports. Use of all venues is confirmed and we are currently negotiating a lease, ready to sign contracts. Regarding sports facilities managed by the City Administration, we have completed technical documentation for public procurement, in order to adjust it and reconstruct it. Perhaps the most important is building of a sand sports center at “Ada Ciganlija“ due to beach handball and beach volleyball competitions that will be held there.

The idea is that the Games enrich Belgrade`s sports infrastructure and raise Universities sports standards.

-That is our high-reaching goal. To enable and prepare all sports venues for the competition, after which it will remain under the authority of City Administration and Associations so the competitions of the highest international ranking could be continuously held.

Central events will take place in Stark Arena in New Belgrade, known for hosting European and World Championships in the most popular sports.

-The Opening and Closing ceremonies will take place in Stark Arena. Also, a basketball competition is going to be held there, while “small Arena” will be place for handball and futsal trainings.

How many people are needed to get all the venues in optimum condition for competing?

-At this moment we have 14 employees in Sports venues department, that are dealing with sports venues, sports village and logistics, and by the beginning of the Games this department will count 119 employees. Our job is to prepare sports venues, together with colleagues and branch sports associations, so that the Sport department, with coordinators of the competition, could set up playing grounds with all necessary equipment. Besides, our responsibility is to provide all temporary structures, electricity and other related items.

The largest venue will be the Sports Village located in dormitory ‘’Studentski grad’’ in New Belgrade.

-It will accommodate all athletes, as well as all of our departments, including EUSA`s, NUSA`s offices and other participants of the organization. Providing venues functionality is a challenge to all of us. – Komnenic has concluded.
