After a short break European University Championships continued and Poland hosted best student handball players. If we can judge by what we saw in Bydgoszcz, handball tournament during European Universities Games in Belgrade will satisfy everyone´s taste.

After a couple of years we again saw in action girls from Vincent Pol University from Lublin as they won their eight gold medal in nine finals they played at the European Universities Championships. They proved that they are still the most dominant team in University sports by defeating team from University of Hamburg 31:25.

University Aix – Marseille won bronze in an exciting match against University of Porto – 34:31.

Male competition brought us an exciting final match between University of Granada and University of Bochum and guys from Spain came as winners and won gold medal by winning 24:21. Crucial point of the match was their run in the second half when they got six goal difference and closed the match in a routine fashion.

Two goals in the last two minutes won bronze medal to the University of Minho as they stay the University with most medals in European University Handball.

Polish national team player Joanna Szarawaga (Vincent Pol from Lublin) and Spaniard Jose Antonio Bravo Gomez (Granada) were crowned tournament MVP´s. University of Hamburg player Victoria Nigbur and University of Bochum player Nils Thorben Schmidt were the best goalkeepers of the tournament and best scorer awards went to Laura Pirrello (Aix – Marseille University) and Oliver Martin Dasburg (University of Bochum).

Team that represented hosts of the fifth edition of European Universities Games, University Union – Nikola Tesla won ninth place, and they were given the Fair – Play award.

Volunteer ilija Ilić from Belgrade was at the event and shared his impressions:

– Championship was great and I wish it could last for a few more days. It was a joy to watch all players having fun, full of energy. Every team had something special, and I cannot wait to see them again in Belgrade next year. – concluded Ilija.
