We wrote yesterday about success of Serbian Universities at the European Universities Championships, and that on the same day four more EUC´s concluded. We have a chance to meet new (and old) champions in five more sports and already name teams that can be considered to be the favorites in their disciplines at the fifth European Universities Games in Belgrade.
The most interesting competition was held in the Polish city of Poznan, where we saw best basketball university teams for the fifteenth time, at the EUC. It was exciting in the men competition, because three teams had equal chances to win the gold. For the third consecutive time the trophy went to the University of Bologna, who won against University of Beykent in the final. Bronze medal went to the University of Vytautas Magnus (LTU) that was undefeated till this year.
Final of the women competition was against the gold and bronze medal winners from Coimbre, and the first place this year went to the University of Strasbourg, while girls from Vienna had to satisfy with the silver medal this year. Bronze went to Romania, to the University of Pitesti.
Madrid hosted best football players. Women competition brought us great surprise as University of Montpellier didn´t won a single medal. They lost the third place match to the team from Kharkiv, Ukraine who took home the bronze. Final match was between the team of University of Coimbre, and last year´s bronze medal team of University of Frankfurt. Girls from Germany went a step further than last year, but they didn´t won the gold. Goals of Jessica Pastilha and Anna Dias helped their team win the gold.
Male tournament fulfilled the expectation and the team that is every year among the favorites made it to the gold medal. State University of Kuban scored four goals to the Ternopil University from Ukraine in the final match. Bronce went to the Spanish team from University of Almeria.
Capital of Montenegro hosted best tennis players and it almost happened that the same teams win medals, as last year in Coimbra. Underachievers were the girls from University of Stirling who lost the third place match to University of Grenoble. In the great final University of Bordeaux again were not good enough to win the gold, as Istanbul Aydin University stopped them in the final.
Top three teams in the men competition were all “new faces”. Gold went to the Polish team from Kozminski University, as the silver medal went to University of Lille. Bronze, in the match of two Istanbul Universities went to the boys form Istanbul Bilgi University.
At the end we we need to mention to sports that were played in the Slovenian city of Koper. First European Universities Water Polo Championship hosted five teams, all of them in the mend competition, and after five days of matches guys from Technical University of Lodz won the gold, by winning against Budapest Business School. Third place went the Aachen, to the Rhine-Westphalia Institute of Technology.
After a year break we had the chance to see the Beach Volleyball again, because the sport was not part of the European Universities Games in Coimbra last year. Bad weather was the reason why we had three gold medals, and all three went to Austria. Men´s final was stopped and it was decided that both University of Linz and University of Graz go home wearing gold medals. Women competition was also won by the team from Austria, because University of Vienna won against University of Warsaw. Bronze in both men and women competition went to Lithuania – boys from the Lithuanian Sports University and girls from Vytautas Magnus University finished third.
If all teams that we mentioned in the text come to Belgrade next year to play at European Universities Games, we can expect a lot of exciting matches!
