University sport in Serbia officially started in 1953, because on the eight of May that year University Association for Physical Education of Yugoslavia was founded, with the aim to organize and take care of conditions so that students can do sports. Now, like before, engaging in sports activities is one of the most important part of extracurricular activities.
Today, student of almost every University are divided into seven local University Sports Associations of the University Sports Association of Serbia. How important is for students to take part in the sport activities can be described by the fact that dozens of matches are played all over Serbia. By the end of the season, competitions between universities take place, and then it is decided who will represent Serbia at the international competitions.
At international competitions, Serbia was present from the very beginning. Since the first Universiade in 1957 in Torino, students from Serbia participated at more than 1000 international competitions and won over 500 medals. Serbia was also the host of the 2009 Summer Universiade, competitions that remains the largest sport event organized in our country.
University Sports Association of Serbia is one of the founders of European University Sports Association in 1999, and is remembered as the first host of the European Universities Championship ever. We mentioned several times that Serbia is fourth country with the most EUSA championships organized.
All these are clear evidence that Belgrade and Serbia appreciate University sport. We are sure that everyone present at the fifth European Universities Games, either as athletes and volunteers, will bring home a lot of great memories from the capital of University sport in Europe next year.
