Serbian sport can brag about its success in every field, and one of the most popular team sports at the moment, owes a lot directly to student sport. Futsal, sport that is still in the shadow of the most important thing in the world, grew parallel at the student and professional court and biggest successes are directly connected to student sport. That is why futsal tournament will be one the most exciting at the fifth European Universities Games.
Most important influence of student futsal to professional version of the sport is visible every year when Ekonomac and FON run on the pitch and dominate all around Serbia.
Best futsal team in Serbia and for several years one of the best teams in Europe started its journey at the beginning of the 21st century. Long time ago, in the year 2000 group of students from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Kragujevac, led by Professor Veroljub Dugalić and a couple more assistants started a club that is now middle name futsal in Serbia. The team that won 11 championship titles in the past 12 years is currently number ranked seve among futsal clubs in Europe.
Several years before Ekonomac, futsal team of Faculty of Organizational Science organized and started playing. Futsal section of this faculty was founded in 1997 and a large part of its history they played domestic and international universities competitions. It took eight years for futsal team of Faculty of Organizational Science to step in professional futsal, at the moment named KMF Slodes. Under that name they managed to qualify for the top tier of Serbian futsal only once. Until 2015, when the team was officially named KMF FON, their results varied. Since that year onward, they have incredible results and are currently among the best four teams in Serbia.
Influence of university sport is visible also in the Serbian National Team, and even the biggest success of the national team was tightly related to it. Fifth European Universities Games, according to history of futsal in Serbia, will be a cornerstone of another success of the national team and all lovers of the sport will enjoy next summer in Belgrade.
