Belgrade University is a public University and has around 100.000 students studying at 31 faculties that are categorized into four groups:

As a part of the University there are also 11 scientific institues as well as 13 centers.
History of the University of Belgrade
Studying at the University of Belgrade means studying at the biggest and the oldest educational institution in Serbia. Since the beginning University underwent frequent changes.
Serbia´s famous educator, Dositej Obradović is considered to the the founder of the University of Belgrade. He founded “The Great School” (Velika škola) in 1808 which grew to become the University of Belgrade – the most significant academical institution in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, as well as a very recognized institution throughout Europe.
During the World War II, University was closed for several years due to the occupation of the German army, and started working again after the liberation.
Number of student rapidly grew, and new department were formed. Main building of the University, known under the name Kapetan Mišino zdanje (Captain Miša´s Building) was a gift from one of the wealthiest people of the time, captain Miša Anastasijević. He invested a lot in education, considering that wealthy need to help the people to gain education and that it is the way for entire nation to be enlightened.
Today´s Rectorate building of the University of Belgrade was built in 1863, and in 1979 it was declared national monument of culture from extraordinary significance. Until know it remained one of the most beautiful buildings in Belgrade.

University of Belgrade is conducting academic and vocational studies that are compliant with the rules of The Bologna Declaration. Academic studies are divided into the following categories:
- Undergraduate academic studies
- Master academic studies
- Specialised academic studies
- Doctoral academic studies
Since 2012 University of Belgrade is ranked at the Shanghai Ranking list of 1000 most prestigious world universities. In the newest ranking from 2018 Belgrade Unviersity is between 301 and 400 place

Student life is shown through the activities of the student organizations at each faculty, various vocational programs, seminars, projects, sport events. Student parliament helps students in defending their rights and expressing their opinions about important student topics and questions. Organization of different seminars and workshops that gather students from the region is a great opportunity to exchange experience, improve knowledge in different fields and networking with colleagues.
At the Belgrade University it is possible to attend programs in English and French. Besides, foreign students that come to Belgrade to study are also provided with the course of Serbian language, meeting the city and meeting Serbian culture.
