Last week, first European Universities Championships started and we have our first champions that will, we hope, defend their medals at the fifth European Universities Games in Belgrade. Final day of European Universities Badminton Championship in Lodz, Poland, we got champions in each category.
Students from University of Nottingham were the best at the championship, with four gold and one bronze medal on their chest, University of West Bohemia, Czech Republic won same number of medals, and only one gold, two silver and two bronze medals, while University of Bern won two silver and two bronze medals.
Players that brought the great success for the team from the United Kingdom were two girls, Lillian Yang and Emily Westwood and 20-year-old John Torjussen. Lillian won the gold medal in Women Singles and Women doubles, along with Emily Westwood. Emily Westwood also won the gold medal in Mixed Doubles with John Torjussen, who won the bronze medal in Men Singles. All three together helped their team win gold medal in Teams competition.
Although they had the best ranked male badminton player, currently 163rd in the World, Jan Lauda, University of West Bohemia couldn´t win more medals. Lauda won gold in the Men Singles competition, beating his University colleague Ondrej Kral. Together, Lauda and Kral helped their team win two more medals – silver in Teams competition and a bronze in Men Doubles. Last, fifth medal for University of West Bohemia, was won by Milova Sabina in Womem Singles.
We would like to congratulate to every player on their success and we hope we hope that we will see their skills also next year in the Serbian capitol, at the fifth European Universities Games.
