Badminton came to Serbia after the World War II and until 1970s it was looked as a recreational sport. That was the time when first more serious dedication to the sport started to happen in Belgrade.

However, it was in 1993 when first Badminton clubs were founded, and the pioneers of the sport were in Belgrade, Šabac, Subotica and Apatin. That year, first official badminton match was played between Badminton Club Belgrade and Badminton Club Šabac, and on the September 19 1993 Badminton Federation of Yugoslavia was founded.

Starting from 1994 national competitions for individual badminton players are organized. Starting from 1998 there are team championships for mixed teams, and from 2007 men and women championships are also on the program.
